Working as mental health professionals’ one major challenge we face today is that of clearing the myths about seeking help. Counselling is a way of helping people to solve their own emotional, social, personal or interpersonal problems. A counsellor is not there to advise or direct on matters that bother a person. In counselling counsellor guides you to look at problems with objective way. He shows different dimension to understand the situation. He helps you to know your strengths and weaknesses without being judgemental. The whole idea of counselling is to EMPOWER individuals through rationalizing of thoughts & feelings. Counselling involves the exploration problems in an environment that is both supportive and objective. It also involves the identification of alternative courses of action that might solve a problem. Hence a counsellor will encourage you to share in a safe and confidential environment, will listen to you intently, understand why you feel a certain way and then help you identify negative thought patterns and replace them with positive thoughts. You will discover coping mechanism and identify plan of action to address your concerns. Counsellor suggests strategies for managing and altering patterns of upsetting thoughts, feelings and behaviour. It is a relief sometimes to be true to ourselves and ask for help rather than suffer alone in silence.
